Food Poisoning: Prevention Is Better Than Cure! By Dr. Fatemeh Aghanasiri

Food poisoning is an illness that can cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Food poisoning is caused by eating food that contains germs, such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites.

Germs can get in food in various ways: sick people can transfer the germ to the food, Unwashed or uncooked food which have germs, can infected people. Also the germs can transfer from one food to another food by using same knife or cutting board.

Symptoms of food poisoning will be started from half an hour to a few hours after taking the foods but not until days or weeks later. The patient endorses belly pain which is crampy in nature, nausea and vomiting, fever and also diarrhea.

If you have these symptoms and you are suspicious of food poisoning, you should start to drink liquids to prevent against dehydration such as fresh juices, tea and honey and also low fat foods. It is better not to take fresh vegetables and milk for 1-2 days.

If you could not tolerate eating and drinking because of vomiting and also in case of high fever and sever belly pain or vomit blood, you should refer to your doctor.

 

Prevents against food poisoning by these ways:

– Wash your hands, utensils and food surfaces

– Refrigerate or freeze perishable foods promptly

– keep raw foods separate from cooked food

– cook the foods in proper temperature

– Leftover food should be stored in the refrigerator and re-heated thoroughly before
consumption

– Refrigerator should be cleaned properly and regularly and its temperature should be kept below 4oC
